Using the Love verses on yourself

From Chapter 2 of “You are God’s Masterpiece!”

LOVE IS KIND. It’s okay to be kind to yourself. But it’s also okay to paint your toenails if that’s your favorite thing to do on a lazy Sunday. Take a hot bath at the end of the day if that relaxes you. Or take the kids to the neighbor’s for ten minutes and take a walk around the block.” You are not only being kind to yourself but your husband and children if you have a short “kindness break.” Click To Tweet
LOVE IS NOT EASILY ANGERED. So instead of bashing and insulting yourself when you get angry over something you’ve done, think of things God would say about you. “I am fearfully and wonderfully made. He loves me just the way I am. He wants me to be the best I can be.” We wouldn’t talk so harshly to our family or our neighbors so why are you talking like that to yourself? Again, change those tapes to the positive ones. When you are angry, stop and pray and ask God to help you change your attitude and give you something positive to say about yourself.

LOVE KEEPS NO RECORD OF WRONGS. Just like God doesn’t keep a record of your sin, you should not keep a list of wrongs you have done. DO NOT keep reminding yourself of your sins. Just like God has forgiven you, you have to forgive yourself. Click To TweetIn chapter four of my book I talk more about sin and forgiveness.

LOVE IS HOPEFUL. What are you hoping for? Are you hoping for a spouse? A child? A second or third child? A word from God about where and how to serve Him? A new job? A new house? None of these things are selfish. They are a part of life and God cares about each and every hope and dream. But please be reasonable. Don’t pray for a mansion when you can only afford a cottage. Don’t pray for a Mercedes when you can only afford a Chevy. God has a plan and it isn’t always what you want. But it’s the best thing for you.” If you have read about me, you know that I have five children. I reveal much more about what our family has gone through in my book. The last one graduated high school this last weekend and will leave for Marine Corps boot camp on Monday. So right now I am just hopeful he will be safe for the next four years. AMEN?!

LOVE PERSEVERES AND ENDURES THROUGH ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. Remember the Footprints poem? There was only one set of footprints in the sand when the writer was going through the hardest times and Jesus said, “It was during those times that I carried you.” We may not “feel” like anyone is helping us. We feel alone and wandering in the wilderness but GOD IS WITH YOU. He is Emmanuel. He is Faithful and loves you without question no matter what you have done. All you have to do is ask His forgiveness and presence in your circumstance.

  1. Thank you for your post. I had never thought about using “the love chapter” as an example of loving myself, too. I will certainly take this with me throughout the day and meditate upon these thoughts.

  2. Hi Steph! I’m blessed to be your neighbor over at #TeaAndWordTuesday. These are great thoughts–it’s so important to speak the beautiful Words of Scripture over ourselves, just as we would speak it over our family and friends! Thanks for these reminders to keep our perseverance and focus on HIM!

  3. It is so important to show kindness to ourselves and to be sure to forgive ourselves. We do need to remember how God looks at us through Jesus with eyes of love. May we remember to love ourselves and to love others and speak works of kindness to encourage and point people to God.

Blessings to you! I’m a neighbor at #TeaAndWord.

  4. I don’t think many of us think to apply the truths of 1 Corinthians 13 to ourselves, especially the command to keep no record of wrongs. I think that the enemy uses our mental records to defeat us and convince us that we are unworthy of God’s forgiveness. You bring good thoughts that will help us to live in the love of God. thanks!

  5. Using the love verses on myself is a great idea. I am almost always too hard on myself, losing out on the freedom Christ died for and promised me. Thank you for these reminders and resources.

  6. I love the title of your book Steph. Congrats on publishing. Thank you for stopping by today. There is definitely so much to garner from God’s word. What a blessing He has left it for us. We have to remember we are created in God’s image and see ourselves as He sees us. Thanks for sharing these truths from God’s word. Such a pleasure to “meet” you today. Have a fantastic weekend and God bless you and yours.

  7. I love this insight on these verses. I admit, I don’t love myself very well when applying the scripture to myself. Thanks for opening my eyes to this!

  8. I love how you talk about talking to ourselves more harshly than we would friends or family. Sin shouldn’t be excused, but we can give ourselves grace for being human. Life is a lifetime of learning and growing, it’s so easy to forget that once you reach adulthood. Thank you for sharing this!
