This is a quote from Chapter 8:

“When you have a problem, a tragedy or trauma, sometimes there’s just not much you can do right away to change the situation. You lay awake at night, stressing about what to do, worrying, thinking and rethinking about what has happened. One thing I have already mentioned you can do is start a gratitude journal. This is a time to use your journal every hour if needed or at least several times a day because this will help you concentrate on God and not the huge problem you are dealing with. “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Mt. 6:33)

Another list you can make is a list of things that are out of your control. There are some things in all situations that just cannot be changed by us humans, like the size of a cancerous tumor, or the investigation of a crime, or what someone can or will do. But you can put these things down on a list of prayer requests. You can tell friends what to pray for. Some people you might want to tell more details than others. But I have found that if I make these lists it takes them off my mind and clears my mind to do more productive things. Make more lists even, lists of physical things I or others need to do, lists totally unrelated to the problems at hand which could help keep your mind calm. God is the one in control of everything. Some of you who have read my blog before know that I will be moving soon, down-sizing from our large family home since the kids are now grown and gone and moving in with my mother-in-law. We will have our own suite, a two car garage space that will be our living and bedroom. But we still don’t know when we will be moving since my husband’s company hasn’t told us if they will transfer him to a new store or if God will provide him with a new job. So much of our new life is still up in the air. I have made a few lists as all of this has been going on and only half of those things have been crossed off. But I see Him working in our lives despite the uncertainties. God is still good and HE IS ON MY SIDE NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES! Click To TweetI pray you will find this in your life also. God bless you, my friends.

  1. I like the idea of making lists of what I cannot control…it somehow makes it manageable, even if all I can do is write it down and then pray about it. Speaking of prayer, I will be praying for your big move soon! I know it is stressful/unpredictable/tiring/new but I hope it will also bring good.

  2. That’s a great idea to make a list of things that you want others to pray for you. I know I would appreciate having a list like that to pray for my friends and for them to pray for me!

  3. I love your tip – create a list of things you cannot control. As a lover of list making, I think I’ll add this suggestion to my journaling. And, I will be in prayer for your move. Life transitions are not always easy but knowing God is in control and He will make a way is so comforting. What a blessing for your mother-in-law to have you close.

  4. There’s something about putting pen to paper that solidifies things. I find that making lists is very productive and edifying as well. I have done gratitude journals as well. It’s amazing how just finding one or 2 things to be grateful for (especially in difficult times) can change your perspective entirely. Thanks!
