A refreshing, cleansing shower

We have all heard our referred to as dirty or scarlet, but in Hebrews 10 it says Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross allows us to approach God with clean hearts. And in the first chapter of Isaiah, God pleads with his people, He tells them to change their ways, turn away from evil, and do good; if they will be obedient and turn back to him, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow.” That was all a preface to say that we all feel dirty sometimes because of something that we’ve done, today or something in our past. Whether you’ve been a Christian for a day, a year or twenty five years like I have, I hope you will read this post and try it. It may help you get rid of some sin and bring forgiveness.

I don’t know about all of you but at the end of the day, the first sentence of my prayer at bedtime is to ask for forgiveness for whatever sins I’ve comitted that day, those that I remember and those that I don’t. It’s a wonderful, peaceful end to the day, and along with praising Him for His blessings, makes my connection to God a good end to the day. But there was one day last week that helped to cleanse me from sin that I wanted to share with you. I’ve posted in earlier blogs that we are moving soon so my husband and I have been working hard to get rid of twenty years of things that have piled up during our marriage with kids, giving some to Goodwill and moving some to the new place. (And neither me nor my husband are organized people so it’s a bigger mess than we realized.) It’s almost done though and are moving within 30-60 days. So I was taking a shower at the end of day to wash the dirt off not realizing it would be another kind of cleansing shower. I stood under the water before I got out and just imagined all of the sin of today and of my past flowing down the drain. Some of it was little chunks of white lies I don’t even remember telling, a few scraps of loud yelling-at-the-kids, some cursing i’ve done after stubbing a toe or an angry rant. And the biggest one lately was being rude to my husband. You should try it sometime. Use your imagination and make some visual manifestations of those sins that keep coming up. Then watch them flow off your body and down the drain, never to return again, just like your sins when they are forgiven by God.

How will you serve God? Part 2

Serve God by loving your children the way God would. How does God love us? UNCONDITIONALLY.

That means that you love them no matter what they have done. We all fail at things, it is a natural fact of life. You have two choices: you can pat them on the back and say good try or you can help them set attainable goals to be as great as you know they can be. And encourage them to try something new they might be better at. Make sure they know you love them no matter what place they come in. Click To Tweet Most of us have seen the TV reality shows like American Idol or X Factor where contestants audition in front of famous music stars and sing their hearts out for a chance at a music career. Most of them are really good and go on to the next level, eventually to be kicked off by the best. But some we laugh at and wonder how they think they could make it onto the show. Unfortunately, some kids are told they are “Awesome!” and good at everything by their parents. They don’t encourage them to find the one thing they are good at and help them excel at that one thing. This is how they think they can sing like an angel when they really sound like an alley cat. So help your children find the one or two things they love to do and do well, then they will definitely be successful in life. Besides, it is not possible for one person to be perfect at everything so why not be good at one thing?

All five of my children played soccer at age five or so but not all of them continued to play when they got older. Two of them played for their high school teams but one changed to run track in high school and now goes to college on a track scholarship. One of them went on to perform and compete in color guard. And the youngest one didn’t do any sports in high school. So they all had the same beginning in local sports activities but chose different paths later on. Teach them to have realistic expectations. Not every child is going to be the star of the team or have the best artwork on the walls. If all they did is try their best, that was enough for me. And some of them will have the motivation to do better and reach goals they set. But others will decide to move on to something else and make that activity their best.

It pains me to hear of parents who have given up on their children, written them off as unlovable or unsalvageable. They may just need some ‘tough love.’ There may be a situation in which a son or daughter may need the psychological and emotional help of an expert that you cannot offer, which means you have to seek the help of someone who will be able to help them and you deal with those unique problems.

And of course, God would want you to bring up your children to know and love Him, which leads back to another post based on Joshua 24:15, “As for me and my house.” I did not grow up in a Christian home; I wasn’t saved until after I had my first child, so I didn’t know what to teach them about God. I taught them as I learned in church and also relied on what their Sunday school taught them. As a result, they didn’t all take their beliefs into their teens. But I prayed for them daily. And we had conversations every chance I could about what I personally believed. I apologized to them once because I had stopped going to church for a short time because of some stress and spiritual crisis I was going through. But it continued to pray. And now, as adults, most have made the decision to follow Him again. Praise God! But there are still two I am praying for. God is good and He will reach them one day.

How will you serve God?

You can serve God in your Marriage:

Here is what God has to say about wives and marriage: Proverbs 12:4 “A wife of noble character is her husband’s joy, but she who makes him ashamed is like decay in the bones.” (Here are some other Proverbs about wives: 18:22, 21:9, 21:19, 19:13-14) A wife could a blessing to her husband or she could be a quarrelsome, argumentative woman, sounding like a dripping faucet or leaking roof. Other Proverbs say it is better to live on a roof or in a desert than live with a quarrelsome woman. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to sound that annoying or make my husband want to go live on the roof! What does quarrelsome mean? Difficult to please, demeaning, negative, condescending, disrespectful, always reminding him of past mistakes, questioning his judgments and authority. But what does the last verse of Proverbs 19 say? “A prudent wife is from the Lord.” Prudent means good sense, good judgment, careful in managing resources: like the Proverbs 31 woman. I don’t think it’s at all possible to have every attribute of the Proverbs 31 woman, but we can strive for a few of them. And thankfully in this century we have more modern conveniences than she did then and it is easier to go to the store to buy clothes and food rather than make it all ourselves!

Then there is a verse about submission. Ephesians 5:22-24 says wives should submit to their husbands but it also says the church submits to God. Aren’t we as a church eager to please God? If we love and respect our husbands, we are willing to submit. But if you aren’t willing to submit to a decision your husband makes, you need to pray. Pray that he will be wiser and seek God for his answers or pray that you will.  Although it does not say we should do everything our husbands say. DO NOT DO anything that is against the law, God’s laws or the governments laws. That would not be something God would ask of you. If you married a good man that does not generally break the law and loves you, you should not worry he would ask you to do something that God wouldn’t want you to do. Verses 25 through 28 of chapter 5 tell husbands to love their wives. So God is also asking men to give something to their wives in marriage, not only women. A good marriage should be 100% commitment given by each person to God to love, respect and cherish… Click To Tweet Cherish means to adore, hold dear, love, dote on, be devoted to, revereesteem, and admire.

Marriage is the hardest relationship of any other that we humans enter into. It is one that we choose. We get to choose the one person that we spend the rest of our lives with. Marriage is meant to be a lifetime commitment. Although a lot of people in today’s society choose to end their marriages before even trying to make them work. Instead of forgiveness, they choose resentment. Instead of faithfulness, they choose to turn to someone outside their relationship when something goes wrong. Instead of kindness, they choose bickering and anger. Instead of trying counseling they choose failure. I hope that you will choose to seek God first and ask Him how to make your marriage stronger. Namely, love, respect and cherish your spouse so that God would be pleased with your service to Him.

As for me and my house,

As Christians who have spent time in church or Sunday school, we have all heard the verse, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) But do you know the whole story? Joshua was one of the prophets alongside Moses and Aaron when God was leading His people across the desert after He brought them out of Egypt. After awhile, Joshua was dying so he met with the leaders and elders of the tribes of Israel. He reminded them of all that God had done for them. God covered the Egyptians with the Red Sea, He also conquered many of their enemies in the land with miracles and unexplained routs in His name. Verse 15 of chapter 23 of Joshua says, “But just as all the good things the Lord your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the Lord your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you.”

So Joshua starts out reminding them of where they were before God rescued them from the Egyptians and what happened to the Egyptians when they did not let God’s people go. Then in verse 13 of chapter 24, Joshua reminds them it got even better when they got to the Promised Land. “‘So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’” He continues his speech with instructions on how to serve God best, faithfully and rejecting the gods they served in Egypt or the gods of the Amorites, who live in the land where they are. Finally, that’s when he says, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) Because he realized what God had done for him.

Everyone has a house, a home where they live. Even though every home is different and we all have different habits and ways of doing things, we all serve the same God. I know people who serve God at home and not at work or school. They go to church every week but leave God there and don’t think about Him the rest of the week. They don’t think it is important for everyone to know who they believe in and why they live the way they do. But God wants you to serve Him with your whole heart. First Chronicles 28:9 says, “Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. Click To Tweet So make up your mind to serve Him and let all the earth know it, you will be blessed for it. In Romans, Paul tells us not to be ashamed of the gospel because “It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes…”

DON’T YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF SAVING THE WORLD? Serve God with your whole heart and a willing mind. Ask Him what He wants you to do for Him. Be like Joshua and the Israelites and serve the Lord.

Summer Bible study review

Over the summer we have been looking at ways you can love yourself the way God wants you too. Here is a review…

  1. Listen to christian radio so when you wake up each morning, you remember how much God loves you and set your mind and focus on Him accordingly. With lyrics like “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” “I can only imagine what it will be like,” “Live like you’re loved,” and “My Redeemer lives,” how can we not remember that He should be our number one priority, which will also help you remember that He loves you like no other person in the world? Here is the link to Greatest Love of All.
  2. We are our own worst critic. But when we realize what we are doing we need to stop and repeat, “God loves me, it doesn’t matter.” “I don’t have to be perfect, God loves me anyway.” Or “I have other strengths, even if this isn’t one of them.” YOU ARE HIS MASTERPIECE! You are one of a kind. There is no one else like you. And you are valuable. Sure, you are imperfect. You are human. Only God is perfect. But He loves you even if you are flawed. Here is the link to You are God’s Masterpiece post.
  3. We have all read the Love verses (1 Cor 13:4-7) meant to be a guide on how to love others but we can also use it to love ourselves. This was a very descriptive and longer post and you can read it here. Here is the link to Using the Love Verses on Yourself.
  4. As it says in Psalm 51, He will wash you clean of all sin and guilt. This is one of God’s gifts to you. It’s rude to hand it back. So don’t try to bring the sin up again and think about it and role it around in your brain over and over. God has forgotten it and so should you. This is one of those times when you have to change your thinking and block thoughts of those sins out of your mind. (Phil. 4:8) Think on the wonderful things that God has done for you and not the negative things you have done. Here is the link the to As Far as the East is from the West.
  5. There are people that make themselves feel better by making others feel bad. And unfortunately, if your self-esteem is already bad, it just makes you feel worse. Then your negative tapes start all over again. But God does not want that for you! God wants you to love yourself as much as He loves you! He says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” “You are His MASTERPIECE!” DON’T LET THE WORLD DICTATE WHO YOU ARE. BASE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM ON THE ONE WHO CREATED YOU. Here is the link to Shine Your Light.
  6. What truth do you need to accept to love yourself more? Maybe it’s time to go to the doctor or commit to eat better and exercise.

Maybe it’s making time to go on dates with your husband. Is it time to go back to church? Maybe it’s time to go to the doctor or commit to eat better and exercise. Or is it time to follow God’s prompting and go on that mission trip or start a blog or video channel on YouTube. God will not send you without giving you the gifts and tools to do His will. Tell yourself the truth in love so that you can be a better person for yourself and those around you. Here is the link to Tell Yourself the Truth in Love.

  7. Is there something that God wants you to do that is out of your comfort zone? Lead a Bible study? Talk to a friend who you think needs help? Take the plunge into a new ministry? Find a prayer partner that can pray with you to confirm your answer and give you more courage to “BE BRAVE AND HAVE COURAGE.” (Psalm 27:14) Here is the link to Be Brave.

  8. When you have a problem, a tragedy or trauma, sometimes there’s just not much you can do right away to change the situation. You lay awake at night, stressing about what to do, worrying, thinking and rethinking about what has happened. The first thing you can do is start a gratitude journal. This is a time to use your journal every hour if needed or at least several times a day because this will help you concentrate on God and not the huge problem you are dealing with. “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Mt. 6:33) Here is the link to Making lists.

  9. Remember what Jesus did for you. In John 3:16 it says God loves us so much He sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross. Even if you were the only person on this earth, He still would have asked Jesus to sacrifice Himself so that you wouldn’t have to go live with Satan after you died. That’s how much He loves you. Why would He not love us? He created us.

Christians get depressed too

Depression is a like living in the dark all the time. This picture is a good example of what it feels like: You don’t want to talk to anyone or do anything. You would rather curl up in a closet and close out the world, not deal with kids, family or work. But that’s not a good way to live. It makes us more sad and depressed and keeps us in a never-ending cycle. photo by Jeremy Bishop at Unsplash

If you missed week 1 Greatest Love of All, week 2 You are God’s Masterpiece, week 3 Using the Love verses on yourself, week 4 As far as the East is from the West, week 5 Shine your light, week 6 Tell Yourself the Truth in Love, week 7 Be Brave or week 8 Making lists click on their titles on the right.

This is a quote from Chapter 10: “There are some Christians, pastors and experts even, who say that Christians shouldn’t or can’t be depressed. But depression is an emotion like all others. And God created emotions. Click To Tweet Even people in the Bible were depressed. Psalms 56 is written by David after he is captured by his enemies: “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all of my tears. You have recorded each one in your book.” God knows when we are hurting. He knows when we are in pain and in want. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.” (Ps. 34:18, 19)”

I have been depressed much of my life, even as a child. I have been through a lot of “stuff.” And I know I’m not the only one. Life on Earth is HARD. But God is with us. Click To TweetYou’ve heard the saying, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” But life doesn’t make you stronger, God does. All we have to do is reach out to Him and ask for His help. In Matt. 7:7 He tells us, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” In James 1:5 it says, “If any of you need wisdom, ask our generous God and He will give it to you.” Then in James 4:2, James says, “You do not have because you do not ask God.” So we need to ask, whether it be wisdom, strength, patience, more love for others or ourselves, even for material things we need.

Fortunately, some churches do provide pastoral counseling, or you may have a friend to help counsel and you pray through the situation. In my book, I have lots of suggestions to get you through it. My most effective solution is of course, PRAYER. Every situation and every stage of life can benefit our growth in and dependence on God. Click To Tweet We just have to take advantage of it. And you should take advantage of His love and genuine care for us! If you need help to get closer to God, maybe find a way out of your depression contact me at coachstephmoun@gmail.com.

This is a quote from Chapter 8:

“When you have a problem, a tragedy or trauma, sometimes there’s just not much you can do right away to change the situation. You lay awake at night, stressing about what to do, worrying, thinking and rethinking about what has happened. One thing I have already mentioned you can do is start a gratitude journal. Another list you can make is a list of things that are out of your control. There are some things in all situations that just cannot be changed by us humans, like the size of a cancerous tumor, or the investigation of a crime, or what someone can or will do. But you can put these things down on a list of prayer requests. You can tell friends what to pray for. Some people you might want to tell more details than others. But I have found that if I make these lists it takes them off my mind and clears my mind to do more productive things. Make more lists even, lists of physical things I or others need to do, lists totally unrelated to the problems at hand which could help keep your mind calm. God is the one in control of everything. Click To Tweet He is the creator of the universe and each and every person in it.”

Some of you who have read my blog before know that I will be moving soon, down-sizing from our large family home since the kids are now grown and gone and moving in with my mother-in-law. We will have our own suite, a two car garage space that will be our living and bedroom. But we still don’t know when we will be moving since my husband’s company hasn’t told us if they will transfer him to a new store or if God will provide him with a new job. So much of our new life is still up in the air. I have made a few lists as all of this has been going on and only half of those things have been crossed off. But I see Him working in our lives despite the uncertainties. God is still good and HE IS ON MY SIDE NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES! Click To TweetI pray you will find this in your life also. God bless you, my friends.

My college history teacher asked us to name a favorite food or movie when she was calling names for attendance each day. One day she asked us to name our favorite movie character and why. Now, I have to admit my answer wasn’t an original one. I copied it from someone who was ahead of me in the alphabet. But it was a truthful answer. I do admire Katniss Everdeen because of her bravery and courage. And this revelation was what woke me up and led me to finish the first book I had started but was too scared to publish. I had too much doubt that anyone would want to read it or that it was good enough. But I finally came to the conclusion that I loved to write and I had to write it for someone to read, not just for myself. Plus, it was better than some of the books I had read. So I decided I would just do it and let God do the rest.”

Actually, the first brave thing I did was going to college at 40 years old. I had always been a stay at home mom. My mother was not, she worked a lot of hours and I had to go home after school, missing a lot of extracurricular activities and things with my friends, to babysit my brother. So I decided that I wanted to be home for my kids and watch them grow into little people. All of my kids were in high school when I took the plunge and went off to college. But putting my heart and soul out there for all to see was a totally different thing.

Is there something that God wants you to do that is out of your comfort zone? Lead a Bible study? Talk to a friend who you think needs help? Take the plunge into a new ministry? Find a prayer partner that can pray with you to confirm your answer and give you more courage to “BE BRAVE AND HAVE COURAGE.” Psalm 27:14

This is a quote from Chapter 6:

Whether that means the truth about how you really look in that new dress or how your friend looks in it, it might mean telling that insulting friend that you can’t hang out with her anymore. The truth might be that you have to go to rehab for a drug habit or you have do an intervention for a family member who needs drug or alcohol rehabilitation. Maybe you need to get into the Word more and commit to a deeper relationship with God. What truth do you need to accept to love yourself more? Click To Tweet

When I was 40, the doctor told me I had type 2 diabetes. I am a few pounds more than I should be but not like some who have the disease. Unfortunately, diabetes runs in my family so the genes didn’t give me a choice. For a few years, I was able to control it with just diet and exercise, but now that I am closer to 50, that’s not working. The last time the doctor ordered lab work, my glucose numbers were higher than they should be and I knew she would want to put me on a diabetes medication. I put it off for a few months. But then I began to notice some episodes when my blood sugar was too high and affected me negatively. So I had to admit to myself that if I wanted to live to see my children give me grandchildren, I needed to start taking care of myself better.

Shine Your Light

If you missed week 1 Greatest Love of All, week 2 You are God’s Masterpiece, week 3 Using the Love verses on yourself or week 4 As far as the East is from the West click on their titles on the right.

Chapter 4 of the book is a more in depth study on forgiveness. This is a quote from Chapter 5:

We also doubt God loves us because we don’t think we are good enough. We’ve all had someone in our lives who told us that we aren’t pretty enough, smart enough or we weren’t good at anything. It may have been a parent, or a teacher or a friend. This was the initial cause of our low self esteem. But those people just didn’t/don’t see our potential. They didn’t see how well you could draw or sing or paint or write computer code or give advice. Everyone does something well, God just has to reveal it to you and then you will see just how good you are. You may know what it is but just haven’t shown it to the world yet. Are you afraid that no one will like what you are or what you have done? If God has given you this gift, it is something that is meant to be shared not hidden. Do not hide your light! (Luke 11:33)”

The title of the chapter is “Don’t Let Other People Change Your Self Worth.” There are people that make themselves feel better by making others feel bad. And unfortunately, if your self-esteem is already bad, it just makes you feel worse. Then your negative tapes start all over again. But God does not want that for you! God wants you to love yourself as much as He loves you! He says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” “You are His MASTERPIECE!” DON’T LET THE WORLD DICTATE WHO YOU ARE AND BASE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM ON THE ONE WHO CREATED YOU. And this negativity may be holding you back from doing what God wants you to do. There are some visual exercises like the Favorite Body Part Exercise and the Velcro Exercise in “You are God’s Masterpiece!” that can help you overcome those obstacles and transform your negative tapes into positive ones. Or send this post to a friend who needs a self-love transformation.
