Summer Bible study review

Over the summer we have been looking at ways you can love yourself the way God wants you too. Here is a review…

  1. Listen to christian radio so when you wake up each morning, you remember how much God loves you and set your mind and focus on Him accordingly. With lyrics like “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” “I can only imagine what it will be like,” “Live like you’re loved,” and “My Redeemer lives,” how can we not remember that He should be our number one priority, which will also help you remember that He loves you like no other person in the world? Here is the link to Greatest Love of All.
  2. We are our own worst critic. But when we realize what we are doing we need to stop and repeat, “God loves me, it doesn’t matter.” “I don’t have to be perfect, God loves me anyway.” Or “I have other strengths, even if this isn’t one of them.” YOU ARE HIS MASTERPIECE! You are one of a kind. There is no one else like you. And you are valuable. Sure, you are imperfect. You are human. Only God is perfect. But He loves you even if you are flawed. Here is the link to You are God’s Masterpiece post.
  3. We have all read the Love verses (1 Cor 13:4-7) meant to be a guide on how to love others but we can also use it to love ourselves. This was a very descriptive and longer post and you can read it here. Here is the link to Using the Love Verses on Yourself.
  4. As it says in Psalm 51, He will wash you clean of all sin and guilt. This is one of God’s gifts to you. It’s rude to hand it back. So don’t try to bring the sin up again and think about it and role it around in your brain over and over. God has forgotten it and so should you. This is one of those times when you have to change your thinking and block thoughts of those sins out of your mind. (Phil. 4:8) Think on the wonderful things that God has done for you and not the negative things you have done. Here is the link the to As Far as the East is from the West.
  5. There are people that make themselves feel better by making others feel bad. And unfortunately, if your self-esteem is already bad, it just makes you feel worse. Then your negative tapes start all over again. But God does not want that for you! God wants you to love yourself as much as He loves you! He says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” “You are His MASTERPIECE!” DON’T LET THE WORLD DICTATE WHO YOU ARE. BASE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM ON THE ONE WHO CREATED YOU. Here is the link to Shine Your Light.
  6. What truth do you need to accept to love yourself more? Maybe it’s time to go to the doctor or commit to eat better and exercise.

Maybe it’s making time to go on dates with your husband. Is it time to go back to church? Maybe it’s time to go to the doctor or commit to eat better and exercise. Or is it time to follow God’s prompting and go on that mission trip or start a blog or video channel on YouTube. God will not send you without giving you the gifts and tools to do His will. Tell yourself the truth in love so that you can be a better person for yourself and those around you. Here is the link to Tell Yourself the Truth in Love.

  7. Is there something that God wants you to do that is out of your comfort zone? Lead a Bible study? Talk to a friend who you think needs help? Take the plunge into a new ministry? Find a prayer partner that can pray with you to confirm your answer and give you more courage to “BE BRAVE AND HAVE COURAGE.” (Psalm 27:14) Here is the link to Be Brave.

  8. When you have a problem, a tragedy or trauma, sometimes there’s just not much you can do right away to change the situation. You lay awake at night, stressing about what to do, worrying, thinking and rethinking about what has happened. The first thing you can do is start a gratitude journal. This is a time to use your journal every hour if needed or at least several times a day because this will help you concentrate on God and not the huge problem you are dealing with. “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Mt. 6:33) Here is the link to Making lists.

  9. Remember what Jesus did for you. In John 3:16 it says God loves us so much He sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross. Even if you were the only person on this earth, He still would have asked Jesus to sacrifice Himself so that you wouldn’t have to go live with Satan after you died. That’s how much He loves you. Why would He not love us? He created us.

This is a quote from Chapter 6:

Whether that means the truth about how you really look in that new dress or how your friend looks in it, it might mean telling that insulting friend that you can’t hang out with her anymore. The truth might be that you have to go to rehab for a drug habit or you have do an intervention for a family member who needs drug or alcohol rehabilitation. Maybe you need to get into the Word more and commit to a deeper relationship with God. What truth do you need to accept to love yourself more? Click To Tweet

When I was 40, the doctor told me I had type 2 diabetes. I am a few pounds more than I should be but not like some who have the disease. Unfortunately, diabetes runs in my family so the genes didn’t give me a choice. For a few years, I was able to control it with just diet and exercise, but now that I am closer to 50, that’s not working. The last time the doctor ordered lab work, my glucose numbers were higher than they should be and I knew she would want to put me on a diabetes medication. I put it off for a few months. But then I began to notice some episodes when my blood sugar was too high and affected me negatively. So I had to admit to myself that if I wanted to live to see my children give me grandchildren, I needed to start taking care of myself better.

Using the Love verses on yourself

From Chapter 2 of “You are God’s Masterpiece!”

LOVE IS KIND. It’s okay to be kind to yourself. But it’s also okay to paint your toenails if that’s your favorite thing to do on a lazy Sunday. Take a hot bath at the end of the day if that relaxes you. Or take the kids to the neighbor’s for ten minutes and take a walk around the block.” You are not only being kind to yourself but your husband and children if you have a short “kindness… Click To Tweet
LOVE IS NOT EASILY ANGERED. So instead of bashing and insulting yourself when you get angry over something you’ve done, think of things God would say about you. “I am fearfully and wonderfully made. He loves me just the way I am. He wants me to be the best I can be.” We wouldn’t talk so harshly to our family or our neighbors so why are you talking like that to yourself? Again, change those tapes to the positive ones. When you are angry, stop and pray and ask God to help you change your attitude and give you something positive to say about yourself.

LOVE KEEPS NO RECORD OF WRONGS. Just like God doesn’t keep a record of your sin, you should not keep a list of wrongs you have done. DO NOT keep reminding yourself of your sins. Just like God has forgiven you, you have to forgive yourself. Click To TweetIn chapter four of my book I talk more about sin and forgiveness.

LOVE IS HOPEFUL. What are you hoping for? Are you hoping for a spouse? A child? A second or third child? A word from God about where and how to serve Him? A new job? A new house? None of these things are selfish. They are a part of life and God cares about each and every hope and dream. But please be reasonable. Don’t pray for a mansion when you can only afford a cottage. Don’t pray for a Mercedes when you can only afford a Chevy. God has a plan and it isn’t always what you want. But it’s the best thing for you.” If you have read about me, you know that I have five children. I reveal much more about what our family has gone through in my book. The last one graduated high school this last weekend and will leave for Marine Corps boot camp on Monday. So right now I am just hopeful he will be safe for the next four years. AMEN?!

LOVE PERSEVERES AND ENDURES THROUGH ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. Remember the Footprints poem? There was only one set of footprints in the sand when the writer was going through the hardest times and Jesus said, “It was during those times that I carried you.” We may not “feel” like anyone is helping us. We feel alone and wandering in the wilderness but GOD IS WITH YOU. He is Emmanuel. He is Faithful and loves you without question no matter what you have done. All you have to do is ask His forgiveness and presence in your circumstance.

Choose your thoughts

I didn’t know what I was going to write until today. Usually I have it planned a few days ahead of time. but God was waiting for me to clean up some clutter where I found an old journal. Inside was a piece of paper on which I wrote a note to myself saying: ‘Condemnation is the worst thing you can do as far as spiritual growth is concerned. I know from personal experience that this is what has caused and what makes my self confidence worse. Every time I find something about my self I don’t like or I’ve done wrong, I fixate on it and analyze it to death, which usually makes my confidence go down the toilet and my depression return. Then I found Eph. 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others [and yourself] up according to their needs that it may benefit those who listen.”’

We have to stop the negative self talk immediately or the analyzing and round and round “I should eat less of this” or “get this sucked out” or” have that surgery” thinking makes us crazy. This can bring on depression and more negative thinking. Replace those negative thoughts with positive ones like, “God loves me and thinks I’m beautiful,” “God loves me and I’m wonderfully made,” or “God sent His Son to die for me.” I put this funny cartoon up because it is just like having a good thought on one shoulder and bad thought on the other, WHICH ONE WILL YOU CHOOSE?

I leave you with Paul’s wish for the Philippians, and my wish for you: “May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation, the right righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ, for this will bring much glory and praise to God.” Phil. 1:11

You are God’s Masterpiece!

This is an excerpt of the first chapter of my new book “You are God’s Masterpiece,” which will be released on February 22, 2017.

Picture yourself inside this golden frame. This is how God sees you. He created you and sees you as His best creation.

THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL

God’s love is everlasting, never ending, faithful, and new every morning. Psalm 100:5 says, “His love endures forever. In Jeremiah 31:3 it says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” Psalm 103:17 says, “The love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear Him.” In John 3:16 it says God loves us so much He sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross. Even if you were the only person on this earth, He still would have asked Jesus to sacrifice Himself so that you wouldn’t have to go live with Satan after you died. That’s how much He loves you. Why would He not love us? He created us. Psalm 139:13 says, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Verse fourteen calls us His “marvelous workmanship” and “wonderfully complex.” Who else but an all powerful, all knowing and omniscient God could make so many unique yet different people?

Jesus didn’t have to give his life for you. He made the conscious decision to do it. He could have walked away at any time during the walk to the place where they crucified Him. He could have walked away and denied He was the Son of God after they whipped Him. He could have said “You’re right. I’m just a prophet sent by God to tell you to stop sinning,” after they gave Him that huge cumbersome beam to carry up the hill to Golgotha, or when He got to the top of the hill, or before they nailed those huge painful nails through His hands and feet. But He didn’t. He endured all of those things because He knew it was the only way that we humans could join Him and His Holy Father in Heaven.

Here are some other examples of God’s love from the Bible: In Genesis, God created Eve for Adam as a companion so he would not be alone. He gave Abraham descendants as numerous as the stars. He saved Noah and his family from the flood. He saved Joseph from his brothers’ murderous plans only to make him a great leader and save their lives later. He brought Moses from the palace of Egypt to the desert, striping him of his riches. But later used him to save his people from the pharaoh’s wrath. There are numerous stories from the Bible where God showed His love for His people. And He still does it today. I’m sure you can think of a time when God showed His love for you.

So then why do we doubt God’s love for us? Why do we hate our nose or our eyes or our chunky ankles or any number of other body parts. God says YOU are wonderfully made. In His eyes, you are perfect!

He does and you are….loved

Let’s face it, the world can be an ugly place to live. People are not always nice to each other. I’ve heard so many stories about parents hurting their kids with words, making them feel less then the wonderful people they are. Some family members pick on one person that may be clumsy or chubby just so they can entertain themselves at holiday get-togethers. I’ve heard about people who hang out with friends who do nothing but put them down so they can make themselves feel better. And cyber-bullies type their hate onto people they may or may not know because they are bored and think someone wants to hear their opinion. What I do know is that all of these people are making others feel unloved and lowering their self-esteem to the point that the world does not believe that God loves them. They only rely on other people’s love and most of the time, that fails.

If you’ve read my bio you know that I have 5 kids. And I have been through the scary driving lessons with all of them driving now. The rule in the car is the person who is driving gets to choose what is on the radio. (But no rap music, that’s one thing I can’t stand is rap music.) So this is why I usually prefer to make my husband instruct the kids when they are driving or accompanying them in-training. The other reason is I feel like I am in a panic most of the time and holding onto the seat cushions!

I always have the radio on a christian radio station. It keeps my focus on God and keeps me calm. There’s a song on the radio called “Live like you’re loved.” It says, “…act like you’ve been set free. His love has made you more than enough. So go ahead and be who he made you to be.” I know the one person we can count on to love us all the time is God. When our boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses are not being particularly kind today or our children are not being respectful or our friends are not loving us the way we want them to, all we have to do is look to God for the perfect love that we need. He does love you and and you are loved today, tomorrow and unto eternity! I always welcome your comments and follows on social media… I cannot love perfectly as God does but I do love you too!

White as Snow

It’s snowing again in Washington. That is not unusual except that I don’t live in the mountains. I live at sea level and it is unusual for us. Driving down the road I was thinking how beautiful it is when snow is falling, when it covers everything like a blanket of beauty and quiet. But then cars drive over it and pollution and man made things make it dirty, like our sins and thoughts make us dirty. We are born as innocent babes but make choices that change us and our lives. But I praise God often that He is a forgiving God and all we have to do is ask and we are innocent and white as snow again.

You may think you are too late if you make a mistake. Do think you’ve done something that God can’t forgive? Are there some sins that are so bad He doesn’t love you anymore? If you’ve been to rehab more than 2 times and are still filled with temptation will He help you? If you  have been to prison is there still hope for you? The Bible says “nothing -NO THING – can separate us from God’s love.” So HAVE NO FEAR He will never leave you or stop loving you and His forgiveness will wash you WHITE AS… Click To Tweet

#attitudeofgratitude God’s voice

I was worrying earlier today about something I was writing for my next book. It’s a Christmas devotional that I will publish the last week of November. I was asking God, “Are you sure you want me to do this? Is it good enough? Will they really want to read it?” And He reminded me of something He told me to tell someone a few weeks ago. “God will equip you to do it if He tells you to do it.” In other words, of course it’s going to be good because God put the words in my head to put down on paper (or the computer.) So I am thankful that He is listening to my worries and whispering His sweet voice in my ear.

God knows your name.

There is a song on the radio by Matthew West called “Hello, My Name is…” He talks about people who are hindered by regret and defeat. I’m going to add to it guilt, depression, self-doubt, self-recrimination and criticism or any number of things that keeps you from fully committing yourself and your life fully to God. One of the things I post most about, speak on and am writing a book about is loving yourself as God loves you. But as humans, again and again we insist upon making ourselves and others feel bad about themselves. In the Bible God says His love is, “never ending, everlasting, forgiving, and forgetful (of our sins.) He is rich in mercy, shows no partiality or prejudice. God has plans for good in our lives, and keeps all the promises He has made to us in the Bible, of which there are too many to name here. Matthew’s choruses sing that we are “a child of the one true King.” He tells us we are saved, changed and set free by God and His love. If only it were possible for us to love ourselves as God loved us we would have no problems, right? But that would mean we were perfect and we wouldn’t need God! But we are human and imperfect and we need God more and more each day as the world become more selfish and chaotic.

Here are a few things that you can do to keep your focus on God and not regret, defeat and guilt, etc.

  1. Praise and thankfulness. Remember to praise God for His goodness and blessings in your life, even praise and thank Him for answers to prayer He may not have given you yet. But you know He will, right?
  2. Ask for forgiveness but then ask Him to help you forget those sins like He has. He tosses your sins in to the Sea of Forgetfulness, never to return. And Jesus didn’t come to condemn us either. So you shouldn’t condemn yourself for your sins over and over again either.
  3. Remember that God is on your side. If your are loving Him and obeying His Word, He wants to give you good gifts. So keep putting one step in front of the other and He will bring you joy!
