Summer Bible study review

Over the summer we have been looking at ways you can love yourself the way God wants you too. Here is a review…

  1. Listen to christian radio so when you wake up each morning, you remember how much God loves you and set your mind and focus on Him accordingly. With lyrics like “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” “I can only imagine what it will be like,” “Live like you’re loved,” and “My Redeemer lives,” how can we not remember that He should be our number one priority, which will also help you remember that He loves you like no other person in the world? Here is the link to Greatest Love of All.
  2. We are our own worst critic. But when we realize what we are doing we need to stop and repeat, “God loves me, it doesn’t matter.” “I don’t have to be perfect, God loves me anyway.” Or “I have other strengths, even if this isn’t one of them.” YOU ARE HIS MASTERPIECE! You are one of a kind. There is no one else like you. And you are valuable. Sure, you are imperfect. You are human. Only God is perfect. But He loves you even if you are flawed. Here is the link to You are God’s Masterpiece post.
  3. We have all read the Love verses (1 Cor 13:4-7) meant to be a guide on how to love others but we can also use it to love ourselves. This was a very descriptive and longer post and you can read it here. Here is the link to Using the Love Verses on Yourself.
  4. As it says in Psalm 51, He will wash you clean of all sin and guilt. This is one of God’s gifts to you. It’s rude to hand it back. So don’t try to bring the sin up again and think about it and role it around in your brain over and over. God has forgotten it and so should you. This is one of those times when you have to change your thinking and block thoughts of those sins out of your mind. (Phil. 4:8) Think on the wonderful things that God has done for you and not the negative things you have done. Here is the link the to As Far as the East is from the West.
  5. There are people that make themselves feel better by making others feel bad. And unfortunately, if your self-esteem is already bad, it just makes you feel worse. Then your negative tapes start all over again. But God does not want that for you! God wants you to love yourself as much as He loves you! He says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” “You are His MASTERPIECE!” DON’T LET THE WORLD DICTATE WHO YOU ARE. BASE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM ON THE ONE WHO CREATED YOU. Here is the link to Shine Your Light.
  6. What truth do you need to accept to love yourself more? Maybe it’s time to go to the doctor or commit to eat better and exercise.

Maybe it’s making time to go on dates with your husband. Is it time to go back to church? Maybe it’s time to go to the doctor or commit to eat better and exercise. Or is it time to follow God’s prompting and go on that mission trip or start a blog or video channel on YouTube. God will not send you without giving you the gifts and tools to do His will. Tell yourself the truth in love so that you can be a better person for yourself and those around you. Here is the link to Tell Yourself the Truth in Love.

  7. Is there something that God wants you to do that is out of your comfort zone? Lead a Bible study? Talk to a friend who you think needs help? Take the plunge into a new ministry? Find a prayer partner that can pray with you to confirm your answer and give you more courage to “BE BRAVE AND HAVE COURAGE.” (Psalm 27:14) Here is the link to Be Brave.

  8. When you have a problem, a tragedy or trauma, sometimes there’s just not much you can do right away to change the situation. You lay awake at night, stressing about what to do, worrying, thinking and rethinking about what has happened. The first thing you can do is start a gratitude journal. This is a time to use your journal every hour if needed or at least several times a day because this will help you concentrate on God and not the huge problem you are dealing with. “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Mt. 6:33) Here is the link to Making lists.

  9. Remember what Jesus did for you. In John 3:16 it says God loves us so much He sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross. Even if you were the only person on this earth, He still would have asked Jesus to sacrifice Himself so that you wouldn’t have to go live with Satan after you died. That’s how much He loves you. Why would He not love us? He created us.

Christians get depressed too

Depression is a like living in the dark all the time. This picture is a good example of what it feels like: You don’t want to talk to anyone or do anything. You would rather curl up in a closet and close out the world, not deal with kids, family or work. But that’s not a good way to live. It makes us more sad and depressed and keeps us in a never-ending cycle. photo by Jeremy Bishop at Unsplash

This is a quote from Chapter 10: “There are some Christians, pastors and experts even, who say that Christians shouldn’t or can’t be depressed. But depression is an emotion like all others. And God created emotions. Click To Tweet Even people in the Bible were depressed. Psalms 56 is written by David after he is captured by his enemies: “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all of my tears. You have recorded each one in your book.” God knows when we are hurting. He knows when we are in pain and in want. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.” (Ps. 34:18, 19)”

I have been depressed much of my life, even as a child. I have been through a lot of “stuff.” And I know I’m not the only one. Life on Earth is HARD. But God is with us. Click To TweetYou’ve heard the saying, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” But life doesn’t make you stronger, God does. All we have to do is reach out to Him and ask for His help. In Matt. 7:7 He tells us, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” In James 1:5 it says, “If any of you need wisdom, ask our generous God and He will give it to you.” Then in James 4:2, James says, “You do not have because you do not ask God.” So we need to ask, whether it be wisdom, strength, patience, more love for others or ourselves, even for material things we need.

Fortunately, some churches do provide pastoral counseling, or you may have a friend to help counsel and you pray through the situation. In my book, I have lots of suggestions to get you through it. My most effective solution is of course, PRAYER. Every situation and every stage of life can benefit our growth in and dependence on God. Click To Tweet We just have to take advantage of it. And you should take advantage of His love and genuine care for us! If you need help to get closer to God, maybe find a way out of your depression contact me at coachstephmoun@gmail.com.

Be brave!

This is a quote from Chapter 7:

My college history teacher asked us to name a favorite food or movie when she was calling names for attendance each day. One day she asked us to name our favorite movie character and why. Now, I have to admit my answer wasn’t an original one. I copied it from someone who was ahead of me in the alphabet. But it was a truthful answer. I do admire Katniss Everdeen because of her bravery and courage. And this revelation was what woke me up and led me to finish the first book I had started but was too scared to publish. I had too much doubt that anyone would want to read it or that it was good enough. But I finally came to the conclusion that I loved to write and I had to write it for someone to read, not just for myself. Plus, it was better than some of the books I had read. So I decided I would just do it and let God do the rest.”

Actually, the first brave thing I did was going to college at 40 years old. I had always been a stay at home mom. My mother was not, she worked a lot of hours and I had to go home after school, missing a lot of extracurricular activities and things with my friends, to babysit my brother. So I decided that I wanted to be home for my kids and watch them grow into little people. All of my kids were in high school when I took the plunge and went off to college. But putting my heart and soul out there for all to see was a totally different thing.

Shine Your Light

If you missed week 1 Greatest Love of All, week 2 You are God’s Masterpiece, week 3 Using the Love verses on yourself or week 4 As far as the East is from the West click on their titles on the right.

Chapter 4 of the book is a more in depth study on forgiveness. This is a quote from Chapter 5:

We also doubt God loves us because we don’t think we are good enough. We’ve all had someone in our lives who told us that we aren’t pretty enough, smart enough or we weren’t good at anything. It may have been a parent, or a teacher or a friend. This was the initial cause of our low self esteem. But those people just didn’t/don’t see our potential. They didn’t see how well you could draw or sing or paint or write computer code or give advice. Everyone does something well, God just has to reveal it to you and then you will see just how good you are. You may know what it is but just haven’t shown it to the world yet. Are you afraid that no one will like what you are or what you have done? If God has given you this gift, it is something that is meant to be shared not hidden. Do not hide your light! (Luke 11:33)”

The title of the chapter is “Don’t Let Other People Change Your Self Worth.” There are people that make themselves feel better by making others feel bad. And unfortunately, if your self-esteem is already bad, it just makes you feel worse. Then your negative tapes start all over again. But God does not want that for you! God wants you to love yourself as much as He loves you! He says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” “You are His MASTERPIECE!” DON’T LET THE WORLD DICTATE WHO YOU ARE AND BASE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM ON THE ONE WHO CREATED YOU. And this negativity may be holding you back from doing what God wants you to do. There are some visual exercises like the Favorite Body Part Exercise and the Velcro Exercise in “You are God’s Masterpiece!” that can help you overcome those obstacles and transform your negative tapes into positive ones. Or send this post to a friend who needs a self-love transformation.

Using the Love verses on yourself

From Chapter 2 of “You are God’s Masterpiece!”

LOVE IS KIND. It’s okay to be kind to yourself. But it’s also okay to paint your toenails if that’s your favorite thing to do on a lazy Sunday. Take a hot bath at the end of the day if that relaxes you. Or take the kids to the neighbor’s for ten minutes and take a walk around the block.” You are not only being kind to yourself but your husband and children if you have a short “kindness… Click To Tweet
LOVE IS NOT EASILY ANGERED. So instead of bashing and insulting yourself when you get angry over something you’ve done, think of things God would say about you. “I am fearfully and wonderfully made. He loves me just the way I am. He wants me to be the best I can be.” We wouldn’t talk so harshly to our family or our neighbors so why are you talking like that to yourself? Again, change those tapes to the positive ones. When you are angry, stop and pray and ask God to help you change your attitude and give you something positive to say about yourself.

LOVE KEEPS NO RECORD OF WRONGS. Just like God doesn’t keep a record of your sin, you should not keep a list of wrongs you have done. DO NOT keep reminding yourself of your sins. Just like God has forgiven you, you have to forgive yourself. Click To TweetIn chapter four of my book I talk more about sin and forgiveness.

LOVE IS HOPEFUL. What are you hoping for? Are you hoping for a spouse? A child? A second or third child? A word from God about where and how to serve Him? A new job? A new house? None of these things are selfish. They are a part of life and God cares about each and every hope and dream. But please be reasonable. Don’t pray for a mansion when you can only afford a cottage. Don’t pray for a Mercedes when you can only afford a Chevy. God has a plan and it isn’t always what you want. But it’s the best thing for you.” If you have read about me, you know that I have five children. I reveal much more about what our family has gone through in my book. The last one graduated high school this last weekend and will leave for Marine Corps boot camp on Monday. So right now I am just hopeful he will be safe for the next four years. AMEN?!

LOVE PERSEVERES AND ENDURES THROUGH ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. Remember the Footprints poem? There was only one set of footprints in the sand when the writer was going through the hardest times and Jesus said, “It was during those times that I carried you.” We may not “feel” like anyone is helping us. We feel alone and wandering in the wilderness but GOD IS WITH YOU. He is Emmanuel. He is Faithful and loves you without question no matter what you have done. All you have to do is ask His forgiveness and presence in your circumstance.

You are God’s Masterpiece

This is a quote from Chapter 2 of “You are God’s Masterpiece!” If you missed the first week you can find it here.

‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself’ is found eight times in the Bible. Some translations say “love your neighbor” and some say “love one another.” If we follow Jesus’ example, he loved all kinds of people. He loved men, women and children. He loved people who were sick, lame and blind, even pharisees and tax collectors.

The Message version translates the second part of the verse as “Love other people as well as you do yourself.” But for those of us with self-esteem issues, that isn’t as easy as it sounds. Frankly, its easy to love others and really hard to love ourselves. We constantly put ourselves down. We criticize the way we dress or cook or raise our kids.”

Is it the same for you? I am my worst critic. But when I realize it, I stop and repeat, “God loves me, it doesn’t matter.” “I don’t have to be perfect, God loves me anyway.” Or “I have other strengths, even if this isn’t one of them.” These mantras work for a moment. But what we truly need to do is take a moment to pray that God will send his Holy Spirit upon us because He is “the source of all comfort.” (2 Cor. 1:3) The Holy Spirit can send God's lovingkindness upon us so that we can feel loved and love for… Click To Tweet

YOU ARE HIS MASTERPIECE! You are one of a kind. There is no one else like you. And you are valuable. God does not make mistakes. Sure, you are imperfect. You are human. Only God is perfect. But He loves you even if you are flawed.

So today’s lesson is: when you start to beat yourself up about something, STOP! You will never be perfect, but God loves you anyway!! And isn’t that the best news you’ve heard all day?! In my book, you can find other ways to counteract those negative voices in your head.

Greatest love of all

June through August of 2017 I’m posting a Bible study based on my book, “You are God’s Masterpiece!” Here is a quote from Chapter 1, THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL

God’s love is everlasting, never ending, faithful, and new every morning. Psalm 100:5 says, “His love endures forever.” In Jeremiah 31:3 it says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” Psalm 103:17 says, “The love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear Him.” In John 3:16 it says God loves us so much He sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross. Even if you were the only person on this earth, He still would have asked Jesus to sacrifice Himself so that you wouldn’t have to go live with Satan after you died. That’s how much He loves you. Why would He not love us? He created us.”

If you are a parent, think about how much you love your child. If their life was in danger, you would protect them with your life, right? What about if it was your spouse? Or a parent? A sibling? Another Bible scripture says “ Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom. 5:7-8) So that is how God the Father and… Click To Tweet Jesus had a choice. In the garden he made the choice to go with those soldiers and be judged by the human priests. He made the choice to carry the cross up to the hill where He died.

What would it have been like to be in the presence of God? To see people healed and demons cast out? There is a christian song called “I can only imagine.” When I hear it, I have to close my eyes and imagine what it would be like to be with Jesus in Heaven or even with Him when He was here on earth while He was doing miracles and preaching. I’m sure it was much easier to stay focused and live a godly life. But it was also a harder time to live because they had no modern conveniences, such as cars, phones, microwaves, etc. And I like my kitchen appliances that’s for sure!

Praise God we have christian radio, christian singers and songs to keep us focused. It is one way I feel the love of God on a daily basis and keep my eyes and heart on Him. KLOVE is a national chain that has stations all over the US and they also stream their music online. It is definitely better than most of the songs out there that mostly are about sex, breaking up and booties?! I have always had a rule in the car that the driver gets to pick the music so the kids had to listen to mom’s christian tunes. And now, though not all of them are serving God, they still remember the lyrics of the songs. Seeds planted! With lyrics like “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” “I can only imagine what it will be like,” “Live like you’re loved,” and “My Redeemer lives,” how can we not remember that He should be our number one priority?

So when you wake up each morning, I urge you to remember how much God loves you and set your mind and focus on Him accordingly. Click To Tweet Tune the radio to christian radio to surround you with the Holy Spirit, not allowing the world’s music into your car, house and mind.

Do you have issues?

Photo by Roman Drits / http://barnimages.com/

I was watching Dr. Phil the other day with my 24 year old daughter. He was telling the couple on his show that they had “issues” (problems) to work out and that he was going to help them if they would let him. And she made the comment that she too needed help because she had “issues.” I said, “Honey, we ALL have ‘issues!’”
We all have problems in our life, whether it be in our relationships, health, decision-making skills, impulse control, just to name a few. Christians are not immune to this dilemma. NO ONE ON THIS EARTH IS PERFECT EXCEPT GOD. That's why we need Him. Click To Tweet
I am a Dr. Phil fan. He does give good advice. Although I don’t agree with everything he says on the show, he has helped a lot of people. Here are a few of his sage idioms:
YOU TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO TREAT YOU:
In other words, if yo let people talk disrespectfully to you or use you only for their benefit, they are not your friend but your abuser. Real friends give and take with each other. Real friends talk as well as listen. Click To TweetReal friends treat each other with respect and love one another as unto the Lord. (I Cor 13:4-7)
YOUR PAST DOES NOT MAKE YOUR FUTURE:
Dr. Phil says, “Acknowledge your past without being controlled by it.” We all have a past that has made us into the person we are now. But if we are Christians and want to please God we need to forgive those who have hurt us in the past and make a better future.
Phil 3:13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
FORGIVE OTHERS:
Even Dr. Phil talks about forgiveness. He sees it as letting the person you are not forgiving having power over you and affecting your health and heart in a negative way. God tells us that He cannot forgive us if we do not forgive others their sin against us. Both things are true but the end is the same, we always feel better in our hearts if we forgive. And our relationship with God is healed if we forgive.
Dr. Phil claims to be a Christian. He talks about God on his show. Although there are some things he says that I don’t agree with. But I do thank God that his show is on television so that he can help those who cannot help themselves. And the he gives them the resources that they would not have if they weren’t on TV.
I also told my daughter that she didn’t have the “issues” that the people on the show had. Praise God that none of my children have ever been on drugs and are fairly normal people. We have problems but none that we can’t handle without God’s help.

Better than part 2

Last week I wrote about how God wants us to be better than the world. But Jesus made himself “less than” to live on earth. He is God yet He made himself human to show us how much he loves us. Click To Tweet

“Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” Phil. 2:6-8 Let’s look at verses 6 and 7 of the Amplified version: “although He existed in the form and unchanging essence of God [as One with Him, possessing the fullness of all the divine attributes—the entire nature of deity], did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped or asserted [as if He did not already possess it, or was afraid of losing it]; 7 but emptied Himself [without renouncing or diminishing His deity, but only temporarily giving up the outward expression of divine equality and His rightful dignity] by assuming the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men [He became completely human but was without sin, being fully God and fully man].”

Jesus emptied himself of all of his Godly attributes to come down to earth and appear to us lowly humans. Isn’t that awesome! God not only loved us enough to come down to earth and sacrificed his life to save us from our sins, he gave up his place in Heaven to do it. And in honor of his lowly visit to us, he asks that we be humble and “think of others better than ourselves.” Phil. 2:3 Jesus loved all people, lame, leper, men, women, but especially sinners. So this is the way we should live our lives also. Paul tells us in Philippians to love one another, work together with one mind and purpose, don’t try to impress others and don’t look out only for your own interests. These are only some of the Bible’s instructions or code of conduct, and to me a great way to honor Jesus’ sacrifice. I hope you too will contemplate our Lord’s willingness to come down to earth and love us personally this week.

I leave you with Paul’s wish for the Philippians, and my wish for you: “May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation, the right righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ, for this will bring much glory and praise to God.” Phil. 1:11

Better than

A phrase came across my thoughts this week, “better than.” We can think of it in two ways, positively and negatively. Click To Tweet He wants us to love Him with our heart soul and mind, to the best of our ability. Then follow His commands and use our gifts to tell others about Him. In 1 Corinthians 1:26 it say, “…few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.” In other words, He doesn’t choose perfect people to serve Him. He chooses people who love Him and willingly serve Him whether it be as preachers, teachers, counselors, or bloggers online. Last week I was discouraged because I was noticing that other bloggers had better posts. Their posts were more organized: “3 things that God…,” “5 ways to…,” “How to….” Their posts are generally longer and wordier. But I prayed about it and God said, “You are doing it the way that is best for you.” I may be disorganized and not as spiffy looking as some of the others. And I do write shorter blogs. but I write shorter, succinct blogs because people are busy and they don’t have time to read 600-800 words. I feel like I’m doing it the way I should be according to what God has called me to do.

The other “better than” is the way the world thinks. Most people strive to be better than their neighbors. They want to have a better house, car and wardrobe, the most up to date phone and TV, technology and job. But God doesn’t want that for us. The Bible says it is unwise to compare yourself to others in 2 Corinthians chapter 10. Psalm 139 says God made us wonderfully and Ephesians 2:10 says we are His masterpiece. So God is telling us that we are perfect just the way we are. And we don’t need more to make us “better than” anyone else. Sure, we may need a good wardrobe for our job and a sufficiently tech savvy phone to accommodate our life. But it doesn’t have to make us go into debt we cant afford. I’ve been in debt and it’s not a lot of fun. And it’s not what God wants. There are many Christians who teach about money to help you learn how to manage it better. Click To Tweet
