Kindness at Christmas

K IS FOR KINDNESS. Galatians 5:22 “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

It is one of the nine traits listed in the Fruits of the Spirit by Paul in Galatians. We, as Christians, should already be well-known by friends and family for our peace, patience, kindness, etc but it is often more difficult this time of year. It seems that the attitude of people these days is to find the best deal at the most crowded store. The world’s idea of the ideal Christmas is to get their children or other loved ones the most unique or most expensive gifts. Unfortunately, they often do it without much kindness or consideration for others’ personal space. As Christians, we need to make sure that those around us know we celebrate Jesus’ birthday on the 25th day of December, not just how much money we spend. You can use your attitude and the fruit of the spirit to do this. You can be the one who makes the day of the shopper next to you who can’t figure out what to get their sister or spouse. Are you good at gift giving? Or gift wrapping? Help someone who seems lost and not sure what to do. What about your family? Is someone having an especially hard time emotionally or financially this year? Or a neighbor? Some families make it a tradition to volunteer at a shelter or donate toys to your local toy drive. Of course there are many more fruits of the spirit that can be poured out onto others in a charitable situation or even in the retail stores I mentioned. You can make the day of someone, or the child of someone, who may have been standing on the edge of a temper tantrum!

Let me tell you about the kindest thing I received during the Christmas season. In 1994, I was a single mother of two and struggling to work, trying to pay for daycare and food too. In Sunday school several weeks before Christmas, there was a lesson about witnessing to others at work. I spoke up about my struggles, saying I still needed to pay attention to those around me, even though I was having a hard time of it, and listen to God’s prompting to speak about Him not worrying so much since He would take care of those other things. By the end of the class, I had three checks to help me with groceries. Then Christmas eve, a garbage bag filled with presents showed up at my door! I didn’t ask for the help. But just because I was at the right place at the right time and I was brave enough to speak about my problems, my children and I were blessed by the women of the church. Sure enough, He did take care of us.

Keep Christ in Christmas

I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet and I’m talking about Christmas. But hey, at least wasn’t talking about it before Halloween like some stores were putting out Christmas stuff next to the Halloween decorations! I’m talking about it because after Thanksgiving it’s the next thing on most people’s minds. This year all my kids are gone, adults now and on to bigger and better things. I’m so proud of all of them, they are in college or some type of tech school and doing well. But that means that me and their dad are moving on to a new life of our own.

I don’t know where you are at in your life but this Christmas I hope you are first seeking God and putting Him first, before all the gifts, decorations, who wants what and trimmings. Matthew says that if we put Him first everything else will fall in to place. God has given me the gift of writing and He helps me put words on the page (for me and) for others to share His wisdom. I have just published a devotional called “Keep Christ in Christmas.” It’s 10 minutes for 21 days and will help keep your focus on God this Christmas. Each day includes:

What would Jesus do? #2

What would Jesus do after hearing about this shooting in Texas? First of all, I think He would pray for all of the people involved. There was one scene in the media where three people were praying together. We don’t know who they were or what they were praying for but it is the epitome of Christianity, and the first thing we should do when some crisis or tragedy comes into our lives. In Matthew 17 Jesus prayed that the Father would help his followers experience perfect unity and the world will know He sent Jesus.

Second, He would and comforted everyone there with hugs, a pat on the back, or a word of encouragement. Then Jesus would have served the people in practical ways by making phone calls, making meals, driving people places who are in no condition to drive because of emotions or physical problems, visiting the victims in the hospital and many other things I can’t think of, I’m sure.

In addition, Jesus would be helping the law enforcement officers, nurses, and doctors do their jobs. And He would have been compassionate and filled with love and kindness doing all of it. Click To Tweet So friends, think and act like Jesus whenever you can because He made the ultimate sacrifice for you on the cross. And you can thank Him each day for it.

What would Jesus do?

 

There is a billboard in a town near me that is owned by a political comedian. (tongue in cheek) He changes the sign every month making silly statements about the state of the government. And he also points out obvious things we should be thinking about. The last time I drove by it said, “Who wouldn’t want to make America great again?” Of course we do! But I’m going to go out on a limb here (and this is my personal opinion and some may not agree with me,) but I don’t think that America is better right now under the new leadership. What has happened since January? Inequality, more prejudice since the civil war, violence, and neo-nazis coming out of the woodwork.

The next question is, “What would Jesus do?” Jesus associated with all kinds of people: Jews, Samaritans, sinners, the blind and lame, tax collectors, men and women. I know there were also people of all skin tones in his time and he treated them all the same. He created and loves each and every one of us and asks us to do the same. I live in a small city of only 50-60,000 and white people are definitely the majority here. But when I do go to a more populated area, I make sure to smile at everyone I meet and make sure to treat them like I would my friends at church.

And if they don’t treat you the same the Bible says, “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.” Mt. 10:14 There are times when it is best to just walk away. You can pray for them and leave them for God to love in other ways. But using harsh words or curse words in return will only make them think, “suuuuure, she’s a good (hypocritical) Christian.” So friends, put on a happy face and smile at everyone you see because it might be the only one they see today. It may be they just got bad news and they needed something to change their outlook. Be Jesus for them today.

The holidays are here! Tomorrow is Halloween, soon it will be Thanksgiving and then before we know it, it will be Christmas!! but this is the first year we will be empty nesters and my first without the kids around. So to cheer myself up and invite friends to share the holidays with me, I am starting a Linkup party!! Note: I am on the West coast so I will be posting later than some of you in the East.

A refreshing, cleansing shower

We have all heard our referred to as dirty or scarlet, but in Hebrews 10 it says Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross allows us to approach God with clean hearts. And in the first chapter of Isaiah, God pleads with his people, He tells them to change their ways, turn away from evil, and do good; if they will be obedient and turn back to him, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow.” That was all a preface to say that we all feel dirty sometimes because of something that we’ve done, today or something in our past. Whether you’ve been a Christian for a day, a year or twenty five years like I have, I hope you will read this post and try it. It may help you get rid of some sin and bring forgiveness.

I don’t know about all of you but at the end of the day, the first sentence of my prayer at bedtime is to ask for forgiveness for whatever sins I’ve comitted that day, those that I remember and those that I don’t. It’s a wonderful, peaceful end to the day, and along with praising Him for His blessings, makes my connection to God a good end to the day. But there was one day last week that helped to cleanse me from sin that I wanted to share with you. I’ve posted in earlier blogs that we are moving soon so my husband and I have been working hard to get rid of twenty years of things that have piled up during our marriage with kids, giving some to Goodwill and moving some to the new place. (And neither me nor my husband are organized people so it’s a bigger mess than we realized.) It’s almost done though and are moving within 30-60 days. So I was taking a shower at the end of day to wash the dirt off not realizing it would be another kind of cleansing shower. I stood under the water before I got out and just imagined all of the sin of today and of my past flowing down the drain. Some of it was little chunks of white lies I don’t even remember telling, a few scraps of loud yelling-at-the-kids, some cursing i’ve done after stubbing a toe or an angry rant. And the biggest one lately was being rude to my husband. You should try it sometime. Use your imagination and make some visual manifestations of those sins that keep coming up. Then watch them flow off your body and down the drain, never to return again, just like your sins when they are forgiven by God.

How will you serve God?

You can serve God in your Marriage:

Here is what God has to say about wives and marriage: Proverbs 12:4 “A wife of noble character is her husband’s joy, but she who makes him ashamed is like decay in the bones.” (Here are some other Proverbs about wives: 18:22, 21:9, 21:19, 19:13-14) A wife could a blessing to her husband or she could be a quarrelsome, argumentative woman, sounding like a dripping faucet or leaking roof. Other Proverbs say it is better to live on a roof or in a desert than live with a quarrelsome woman. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to sound that annoying or make my husband want to go live on the roof! What does quarrelsome mean? Difficult to please, demeaning, negative, condescending, disrespectful, always reminding him of past mistakes, questioning his judgments and authority. But what does the last verse of Proverbs 19 say? “A prudent wife is from the Lord.” Prudent means good sense, good judgment, careful in managing resources: like the Proverbs 31 woman. I don’t think it’s at all possible to have every attribute of the Proverbs 31 woman, but we can strive for a few of them. And thankfully in this century we have more modern conveniences than she did then and it is easier to go to the store to buy clothes and food rather than make it all ourselves!

Then there is a verse about submission. Ephesians 5:22-24 says wives should submit to their husbands but it also says the church submits to God. Aren’t we as a church eager to please God? If we love and respect our husbands, we are willing to submit. But if you aren’t willing to submit to a decision your husband makes, you need to pray. Pray that he will be wiser and seek God for his answers or pray that you will.  Although it does not say we should do everything our husbands say. DO NOT DO anything that is against the law, God’s laws or the governments laws. That would not be something God would ask of you. If you married a good man that does not generally break the law and loves you, you should not worry he would ask you to do something that God wouldn’t want you to do. Verses 25 through 28 of chapter 5 tell husbands to love their wives. So God is also asking men to give something to their wives in marriage, not only women. A good marriage should be 100% commitment given by each person to God to love, respect and cherish the other person. Click To Tweet Cherish means to adore, hold dear, love, dote on, be devoted to, revereesteem, and admire.

Marriage is the hardest relationship of any other that we humans enter into. It is one that we choose. We get to choose the one person that we spend the rest of our lives with. Marriage is meant to be a lifetime commitment. Although a lot of people in today’s society choose to end their marriages before even trying to make them work. Instead of forgiveness, they choose resentment. Instead of faithfulness, they choose to turn to someone outside their relationship when something goes wrong. Instead of kindness, they choose bickering and anger. Instead of trying counseling they choose failure. I hope that you will choose to seek God first and ask Him how to make your marriage stronger. Namely, love, respect and cherish your spouse so that God would be pleased with your service to Him.

As for me and my house,

As Christians who have spent time in church or Sunday school, we have all heard the verse, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) But do you know the whole story? Joshua was one of the prophets alongside Moses and Aaron when God was leading His people across the desert after He brought them out of Egypt. After awhile, Joshua was dying so he met with the leaders and elders of the tribes of Israel. He reminded them of all that God had done for them. God covered the Egyptians with the Red Sea, He also conquered many of their enemies in the land with miracles and unexplained routs in His name. Verse 15 of chapter 23 of Joshua says, “But just as all the good things the Lord your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the Lord your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you.” 

So Joshua starts out reminding them of where they were before God rescued them from the Egyptians and what happened to the Egyptians when they did not let God’s people go. Then in verse 13 of chapter 24, Joshua reminds them it got even better when they got to the Promised Land. “‘So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’” He continues his speech with instructions on how to serve God best, faithfully and rejecting the gods they served in Egypt or the gods of the Amorites, who live in the land where they are. Finally, that’s when he says, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) Because he realized what God had done for him.

Everyone has a house, a home where they live. Even though every home is different and we all have different habits and ways of doing things, we all serve the same God. I know people who serve God at home and not at work or school. They go to church every week but leave God there and don’t think about Him the rest of the week. They don’t think it is important for everyone to know who they believe in and why they live the way they do. But God wants you to serve Him with your whole heart. First Chronicles 28:9 says, “Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. Click To Tweet So make up your mind to serve Him and let all the earth know it, you will be blessed for it. In Romans, Paul tells us not to be ashamed of the gospel because “It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes…”

DON’T YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF SAVING THE WORLD? Serve God with your whole heart and a willing mind. Ask Him what He wants you to do for Him. Be like Joshua and the Israelites and serve the Lord.

Summer Bible study review

Over the summer we have been looking at ways you can love yourself the way God wants you too. Here is a review…

  1. Listen to christian radio so when you wake up each morning, you remember how much God loves you and set your mind and focus on Him accordingly. With lyrics like “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” “I can only imagine what it will be like,” “Live like you’re loved,” and “My Redeemer lives,” how can we not remember that He should be our number one priority, which will also help you remember that He loves you like no other person in the world?   2. We are our own worst critic. But when we realize what we are doing we need to stop and repeat, “God loves me, it doesn’t matter.” “I don’t have to be perfect, God loves me anyway.” Or “I have other strengths, even if this isn’t one of them.” YOU ARE HIS MASTERPIECE! You are one of a kind. There is no one else like you. And you are valuable. Sure, you are imperfect. You are human. Only God is perfect. But He loves you even if you are flawed.   3. We have all read the Love verses (1 Cor 13:4-7) meant to be a guide on how to love others but we can also use it to love ourselves. This was a very descriptive and longer post and you can read it here. Here is the link to Using the Love Verses on Yourself.
  4. As it says in Psalm 51, He will wash you clean of all sin and guilt. This is one of God’s gifts to you. It’s rude to hand it back. So don’t try to bring the sin up again and think about it and role it around in your brain over and over. God has forgotten it and so should you. This is one of those times when you have to change your thinking and block thoughts of those sins out of your mind. (Phil. 4:8) Think on the wonderful things that God has done for you and not the negative things you have done. Here is the link the to As Far as the East is from the West.
  5. There are people that make themselves feel better by making others feel bad. And unfortunately, if your self-esteem is already bad, it just makes you feel worse. Then your negative tapes start all over again. But God does not want that for you! God wants you to love yourself as much as He loves you! He says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” “You are His MASTERPIECE!” DON’T LET THE WORLD DICTATE WHO YOU ARE. BASE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM ON THE ONE WHO CREATED YOU.   6. What truth do you need to accept to love yourself more? Maybe it’s time to go to the doctor or commit to eat better and exercise.

    Maybe it’s making time to go on dates with your husband. Is it time to go back to church? Maybe it’s time to go to the doctor or commit to eat better and exercise. Or is it time to follow God’s prompting and go on that mission trip or start a blog or video channel on YouTube. God will not send you without giving you the gifts and tools to do His will.   7. Is there something that God wants you to do that is out of your comfort zone? Lead a Bible study? Talk to a friend who you think needs help? Take the plunge into a new ministry? Find a prayer partner that can pray with you to confirm your answer and give you more courage to “BE BRAVE AND HAVE COURAGE.” (Psalm 27:14) Here is the link to Be Brave.

  8. When you have a problem, a tragedy or trauma, sometimes there’s just not much you can do right away to change the situation. You lay awake at night, stressing about what to do, worrying, thinking and rethinking about what has happened. The first thing you can do is start a gratitude journal. This is a time to use your journal every hour if needed or at least several times a day because this will help you concentrate on God and not the huge problem you are dealing with. “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Mt. 6:33) Here is the link to Making lists.

  9. Remember what Jesus did for you. In John 3:16 it says God loves us so much He sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross. Even if you were the only person on this earth, He still would have asked Jesus to sacrifice Himself so that you wouldn’t have to go live with Satan after you died. That’s how much He loves you. Why would He not love us? He created us.

Making lists

“When you have a problem, a tragedy or trauma, sometimes there’s just not much you can do right away to change the situation. You lay awake at night, stressing about what to do, worrying, thinking and rethinking about what has happened. One thing I have already mentioned you can do is start a gratitude journal. Another list you can make is a list of things that are out of your control. There are some things in all situations that just cannot be changed by us humans, like the size of a cancerous tumor, or the investigation of a crime, or what someone can or will do. But you can put these things down on a list of prayer requests. You can tell friends what to pray for. Some people you might want to tell more details than others. But I have found that if I make these lists it takes them off my mind and clears my mind to do more productive things. Make more lists even, lists of physical things I or others need to do, lists totally unrelated to the problems at hand which could help keep your mind calm. God is the one in control of everything. Some of you who have read my blog before know that I will be moving soon, down-sizing from our large family home since the kids are now grown and gone and moving in with my mother-in-law. We will have our own suite, a two car garage space that will be our living and bedroom. But we still don’t know when we will be moving since my husband’s company hasn’t told us if they will transfer him to a new store or if God will provide him with a new job. So much of our new life is still up in the air. I have made a few lists as all of this has been going on and only half of those things have been crossed off. But I see Him working in our lives despite the uncertainties. God is still good and HE IS ON MY SIDE NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES! Click To TweetI pray you will find this in your life also. Tell yourself the truth in love

Whether that means the truth about how you really look in that new dress or how your friend looks in it, it might mean telling that insulting friend that you can’t hang out with her anymore. The truth might be that you have to go to rehab for a drug habit or you have do an intervention for a family member who needs drug or alcohol rehabilitation. When I was 40, the doctor told me I had type 2 diabetes. I am a few pounds more than I should be but not like some who have the disease. Unfortunately, diabetes runs in my family so the genes didn’t give me a choice. For a few years, I was able to control it with just diet and exercise, but now that I am closer to 50, that’s not working. The last time the doctor ordered lab work, my glucose numbers were higher than they should be and I knew she would want to put me on a diabetes medication. I put it off for a few months. But then I began to notice some episodes when my blood sugar was too high and affected me negatively. So I had to admit to myself that if I wanted to live to see my children give me grandchildren, I needed to start taking care of myself better.

Maybe it’s making time to go on dates with your husband. Is it time to go back to church? Maybe it’s time to go to the doctor or commit to eat better and exercise. Or is it time to follow God’s prompting and go on that mission trip or start a blog or video channel on YouTube. God will not send you without giving you the gifts and tools to do His will. Tell yourself the truth in love so that you can be a better person for yourself and those around you.
