K IS FOR KINDNESS. Galatians 5:22 “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
It is one of the nine traits listed in the Fruits of the Spirit by Paul in Galatians. We, as Christians, should already be well-known by friends and family for our peace, patience, kindness, etc but it is often more difficult this time of year. It seems that the attitude of people these days is to find the best deal at the most crowded store. The world’s idea of the ideal Christmas is to get their children or other loved ones the most unique or most expensive gifts. Unfortunately, they often do it without much kindness or consideration for others’ personal space. As Christians, we need to make sure that those around us know we celebrate Jesus’ birthday on the 25th day of December, not just how much money we spend. You can use your attitude and the fruit of the spirit to do this. You can be the one who makes the day of the shopper next to you who can’t figure out what to get their sister or spouse. Are you good at gift giving? Or gift wrapping? Help someone who seems lost and not sure what to do. What about your family? Is someone having an especially hard time emotionally or financially this year? Or a neighbor? Some families make it a tradition to volunteer at a shelter or donate toys to your local toy drive. Of course there are many more fruits of the spirit that can be poured out onto others in a charitable situation or even in the retail stores I mentioned. You can make the day of someone, or the child of someone, who may have been standing on the edge of a temper tantrum!
Let me tell you about the kindest thing I received during the Christmas season. In 1994, I was a single mother of two and struggling to work, trying to pay for daycare and food too. In Sunday school several weeks before Christmas, there was a lesson about witnessing to others at work. I spoke up about my struggles, saying I still needed to pay attention to those around me, even though I was having a hard time of it, and listen to God’s prompting to speak about Him not worrying so much since He would take care of those other things. By the end of the class, I had three checks to help me with groceries. Then Christmas eve, a garbage bag filled with presents showed up at my door! I didn’t ask for the help. But just because I was at the right place at the right time and I was brave enough to speak about my problems, my children and I were blessed by the women of the church. Sure enough, He did take care of us.

Here it is 12 hours after my surgery and my eyesight with one “fixed” eye is better than both eyes with corrective lenses that were becoming ineffective. Praise God for modern medicine!
As I said I need my previous posts I was anxious before the surgery but they did give me an anti-anxiety drug which helped tremendously. Then I could concentrate on what the dr was asking me to do and not on pain or my surroundings. That’s how God’s Word helps us sometimes isn’t it? Don’t get me wrong, but I’m not comparing God’s Word to drugs… But in order for me to be comfortable on that hospital bed and allow the dr to take a knife to my eye without me kicking and screaming, I needed something to keep me calm. The Bible can give us those words of love, and comfort, and Words straight from God’s own heart to ours to give us peace and love. I hope you will continue to seek God and His Word each day for those things whatever the situation in your life.

A few days ago, I was trying to write a post regarding continuing my study in Colossians but I just couldn’t concentrate and only got about 3 lines written before I gave up. And I usually post something on Mondays so I’m almost a week late now. But of course, God had other plans. I started to look in Paul’s other letters to the churches to see what he said about prayer (because that was the next verse’s theme) and found a verse that stopped my reading further.
“Don’t be intimidated in any way by your enemies. This will be a sign to them that they are going to be destroyed, but that your are giong to be saved, even by God himself.”
Wow! I immediately got a picture in my head of being in an alley with a really scary guy who looks like he wants to do me harm. But then God swoops in like a superhero and saves me!! And have you ever seen the video of the robber who walks into the jewelry store and asks for money but the woman behind the counter yells, “Get out of my store in the name of JESUS?!” The man looks confused for a moment and then backs out of the store without a dime?
God also says He is on our side so this verse does not surprise me but I wonder if I really was confronted by an enemy how I would react. Because you know the first reaction we humans have is to fight or leave. Coud I really act like I wasn’t scared? I’ve seen movies where the victim tries to be calm and unaffected. But could I do it? Not sure. This verse certainly makes me more confident if a dangerous scenario should happen. If I can bring up the picture of God as a superhero in my mind then I would be more likely to stay calm and confront someone when the time comes. But what if it’s not an enemy that is not dangerous physically but mentally or emotionally like cancer or a family member trying to hurt us? God can still defeat cancer, just think of him when the doctors are dispensing chemo. And pray for God to be your superhero when dealing with that stubborn family member. It may take more time than defeating the man in the alley but He is still there to defeat those enemies and He will still win.

My seventeen year old daughter was in an accident two days ago. As a parent your first reaction is always panic when you get that phone call. To make matters worse, we had driven to the coast, which is an hour away so we weren’t near the scene and had to find out what was going on only via telephone (praise God for technology right?!) We finally arrived at the hospital and were relieved to see that she only had a few cuts from broken glass and bruises on her arm from the impact. God was watching over her because it could have been much worse.
A friend and I were just commenting the other day that life is never calm and easy. We just have to keep relying on God to get us through things that come our way. “In this world you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
So life may not be perfect, (after all, if it were, then we would already be in Heaven) but we have a loving God who has a plan that will show us a way to have a joyful and fulfilling life. Pray and ask Him what He wants you to do.
