Kindness at Christmas

K IS FOR KINDNESS. Galatians 5:22 “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

It is one of the nine traits listed in the Fruits of the Spirit by Paul in Galatians. We, as Christians, should already be well-known by friends and family for our peace, patience, kindness, etc but it is often more difficult this time of year. It seems that the attitude of people these days is to find the best deal at the most crowded store. The world’s idea of the ideal Christmas is to get their children or other loved ones the most unique or most expensive gifts. Unfortunately, they often do it without much kindness or consideration for others’ personal space. As Christians, we need to make sure that those around us know we celebrate Jesus’ birthday on the 25th day of December, not just how much money we spend. You can use your attitude and the fruit of the spirit to do this. You can be the one who makes the day of the shopper next to you who can’t figure out what to get their sister or spouse. Are you good at gift giving? Or gift wrapping? Help someone who seems lost and not sure what to do. What about your family? Is someone having an especially hard time emotionally or financially this year? Or a neighbor? Some families make it a tradition to volunteer at a shelter or donate toys to your local toy drive. Of course there are many more fruits of the spirit that can be poured out onto others in a charitable situation or even in the retail stores I mentioned. You can make the day of someone, or the child of someone, who may have been standing on the edge of a temper tantrum!

Let me tell you about the kindest thing I received during the Christmas season. In 1994, I was a single mother of two and struggling to work, trying to pay for daycare and food too. In Sunday school several weeks before Christmas, there was a lesson about witnessing to others at work. I spoke up about my struggles, saying I still needed to pay attention to those around me, even though I was having a hard time of it, and listen to God’s prompting to speak about Him not worrying so much since He would take care of those other things. By the end of the class, I had three checks to help me with groceries. Then Christmas eve, a garbage bag filled with presents showed up at my door! I didn’t ask for the help. But just because I was at the right place at the right time and I was brave enough to speak about my problems, my children and I were blessed by the women of the church. Sure enough, He did take care of us.

Keep Christ in Christmas

I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet and I’m talking about Christmas. But hey, at least wasn’t talking about it before Halloween like some stores were putting out Christmas stuff next to the Halloween decorations! I’m talking about it because after Thanksgiving it’s the next thing on most people’s minds. This year all my kids are gone, adults now and on to bigger and better things. I’m so proud of all of them, they are in college or some type of tech school and doing well. But that means that me and their dad are moving on to a new life of our own.

I don’t know where you are at in your life but this Christmas I hope you are first seeking God and putting Him first, before all the gifts, decorations, who wants what and trimmings. Matthew says that if we put Him first everything else will fall in to place. God has given me the gift of writing and He helps me put words on the page (for me and) for others to share His wisdom. I have just published a devotional called “Keep Christ in Christmas.” It’s 10 minutes for 21 days and will help keep your focus on God this Christmas. Each day includes:

What would Jesus do?

 

There is a billboard in a town near me that is owned by a political comedian. (tongue in cheek) He changes the sign every month making silly statements about the state of the government. And he also points out obvious things we should be thinking about. The last time I drove by it said, “Who wouldn’t want to make America great again?” Of course we do! But I’m going to go out on a limb here (and this is my personal opinion and some may not agree with me,) but I don’t think that America is better right now under the new leadership. What has happened since January? Inequality, more prejudice since the civil war, violence, and neo-nazis coming out of the woodwork.

The next question is, “What would Jesus do?” Jesus associated with all kinds of people: Jews, Samaritans, sinners, the blind and lame, tax collectors, men and women. I know there were also people of all skin tones in his time and he treated them all the same. He created and loves each and every one of us and asks us to do the same. I live in a small city of only 50-60,000 and white people are definitely the majority here. But when I do go to a more populated area, I make sure to smile at everyone I meet and make sure to treat them like I would my friends at church.

And if they don’t treat you the same the Bible says, “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.” Mt. 10:14 There are times when it is best to just walk away. You can pray for them and leave them for God to love in other ways. But using harsh words or curse words in return will only make them think, “suuuuure, she’s a good (hypocritical) Christian.” So friends, put on a happy face and smile at everyone you see because it might be the only one they see today. It may be they just got bad news and they needed something to change their outlook. Be Jesus for them today.

The holidays are here! Tomorrow is Halloween, soon it will be Thanksgiving and then before we know it, it will be Christmas!! but this is the first year we will be empty nesters and my first without the kids around. So to cheer myself up and invite friends to share the holidays with me, I am starting a Linkup party!! Note: I am on the West coast so I will be posting later than some of you in the East.

Greatest love of all

June through August of 2017 I’m posting a Bible study based on my book, “You are God’s Masterpiece!” Here is a quote from Chapter 1, THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL

God’s love is everlasting, never ending, faithful, and new every morning. Psalm 100:5 says, “His love endures forever.” In Jeremiah 31:3 it says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” Psalm 103:17 says, “The love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear Him.” In John 3:16 it says God loves us so much He sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross. Even if you were the only person on this earth, He still would have asked Jesus to sacrifice Himself so that you wouldn’t have to go live with Satan after you died. That’s how much He loves you. Why would He not love us? He created us.”

If you are a parent, think about how much you love your child. If their life was in danger, you would protect them with your life, right? What about if it was your spouse? Or a parent? A sibling? Another Bible scripture says “ Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom. 5:7-8) So that is how God the Father and Jesus his Son express their love for us. Click To Tweet Jesus had a choice. In the garden he made the choice to go with those soldiers and be judged by the human priests. He made the choice to carry the cross up to the hill where He died.

What would it have been like to be in the presence of God? To see people healed and demons cast out? There is a christian song called “I can only imagine.” When I hear it, I have to close my eyes and imagine what it would be like to be with Jesus in Heaven or even with Him when He was here on earth while He was doing miracles and preaching. I’m sure it was much easier to stay focused and live a godly life. But it was also a harder time to live because they had no modern conveniences, such as cars, phones, microwaves, etc. And I like my kitchen appliances that’s for sure!

Praise God we have christian radio, christian singers and songs to keep us focused. It is one way I feel the love of God on a daily basis and keep my eyes and heart on Him. KLOVE is a national chain that has stations all over the US and they also stream their music online. It is definitely better than most of the songs out there that mostly are about sex, breaking up and booties?! I have always had a rule in the car that the driver gets to pick the music so the kids had to listen to mom’s christian tunes. And now, though not all of them are serving God, they still remember the lyrics of the songs. Seeds planted! With lyrics like “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art,” “I can only imagine what it will be like,” “Live like you’re loved,” and “My Redeemer lives,” how can we not remember that He should be our number one priority?

So when you wake up each morning, I urge you to remember how much God loves you and set your mind and focus on Him accordingly. Click To Tweet Tune the radio to christian radio to surround you with the Holy Spirit, not allowing the world’s music into your car, house and mind.

Fine or not fine

How many times have we asked someone how are they doing and they said, “I’m fine,” “everything’s fine,” “just fine.” How many times has a husband asked a wife what’s wrong and the wife says, “nothing, I’m fine.” And how many times have you said it and lied. For most people it’s an automatic response. They say it without thinking either because they don’t have the time to tell someone the real story and how they are actually doing. Or they don’t want to tell someone what’s really wrong.

There was a time when fine was a slang word. When a man said a woman was “fine” it meant she was good looking. Some men might have meant it in a derogatory way but depending on their tone, just like today, it was usually a compliment.

According to the dictionary, fine means high or highest quality, choice, excellent, or admirable, very well, like fine China or wine. But I don’t think this is what most people mean when they say they are “fine.” Some mean okay and some even mean mediocre. But no one who says fine means excellent, of the highest quality or very well.

I don’t know if this has ever happened to you but today when someone asked me how I was doing, I broke down in tears. Several stressful things have been going on and I had just gotten out of the dentist chair, which is WAY too stressful for me. Normally, I would say, “I’m fine.” but today, that would have been a lie. And I was obviously at the end of my “hold it all inside” rope.

If we are brothers and sisters in Christ, why do we lie to each other? There are times when we may not have time to talk but maybe we can make a date for coffee or invite them over. If this is not a friend we trust to keep our story to themselves just ask them to pray for us. If this is someone we don’t know that well, just give them a brief prayer request. God put us together on this earth to help us survive the ups and downs. We should be talking to each other, praying for each other and loving each other like God loves us, not lying to each other when we are asking about our lives.

So when someone asks you how you are doing, can you change your answer? Instead of saying fine, make it a more truthful answer. Say, “I’m good today,” “I could use some prayers about…. Instead of saying fine, make it a more truthful answer. Say, “I'm good today,” “I could use some prayers about.... Click To Tweet or “This has been a really great day! Praise God!! What about you?”

He does and you are….loved

Let’s face it, the world can be an ugly place to live. People are not always nice to each other. I’ve heard so many stories about parents hurting their kids with words, making them feel less then the wonderful people they are. Some family members pick on one person that may be clumsy or chubby just so they can entertain themselves at holiday get-togethers. I’ve heard about people who hang out with friends who do nothing but put them down so they can make themselves feel better. And cyber-bullies type their hate onto people they may or may not know because they are bored and think someone wants to hear their opinion. What I do know is that all of these people are making others feel unloved and lowering their self-esteem to the point that the world does not believe that God loves them. They only rely on other people’s love and most of the time, that fails.

If you’ve read my bio you know that I have 5 kids. And I have been through the scary driving lessons with all of them driving now. The rule in the car is the person who is driving gets to choose what is on the radio. (But no rap music, that’s one thing I can’t stand is rap music.) So this is why I usually prefer to make my husband instruct the kids when they are driving or accompanying them in-training. The other reason is I feel like I am in a panic most of the time and holding onto the seat cushions!

I always have the radio on a christian radio station. It keeps my focus on God and keeps me calm. There’s a song on the radio called “Live like you’re loved.” It says, “…act like you’ve been set free. His love has made you more than enough. So go ahead and be who he made you to be.” I know the one person we can count on to love us all the time is God. When our boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses are not being particularly kind today or our children are not being respectful or our friends are not loving us the way we want them to, all we have to do is look to God for the perfect love that we need. He does love you and and you are loved today, tomorrow and unto eternity! White as Snow

It’s snowing again in Washington. That is not unusual except that I don’t live in the mountains. I live at sea level and it is unusual for us. Driving down the road I was thinking how beautiful it is when snow is falling, when it covers everything like a blanket of beauty and quiet. But then cars drive over it and pollution and man made things make it dirty, like our sins and thoughts make us dirty. We are born as innocent babes but make choices that change us and our lives. But I praise God often that He is a forgiving God and all we have to do is ask and we are innocent and white as snow again.

You may think you are too late if you make a mistake. Do think you’ve done something that God can’t forgive? Are there some sins that are so bad He doesn’t love you anymore? If you’ve been to rehab more than 2 times and are still filled with temptation will He help you? If you  have been to prison is there still hope for you? The Bible says “nothing -NO THING – can separate us from God’s love.” So HAVE NO FEAR He will never leave you or stop loving you and His forgiveness will wash you WHITE AS SNOW! Click To Tweet

There’s something missing…

Ecc. 11:3 1 He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]—yet man cannot find out (comprehend, grasp) what God has done (His overall plan) from the beginning to the end.
As christians, we have friends and family that need to come to Christ, to let Him into their hearts and save them from their sadness, loss and disappointments. This verse tells us that EVERYONE has a longing for God. They know something is missing from their lives, some purpose they are seeking but cannot find. But God knows what it is. And Jesus tells us in the story of the lost sheep (Luke 15:3-7) that He will go and find each person that is lost until all of His people have entered the Kingdom of Heaven where they belong.
So that means you, my dear friends, should pray for your friends and family, so that they will come to know Him like you do. I don’t know if it will be through you or if God will help them see Him in some other way But seek His counsel so that you will be in His will and in line with His plan to let those around you into the Kingdom with you!

daisies   there’s something missing in this picture. there are lots of beautiful daises, hydrangeas, nysturiums and shrubbery. i see some pots and a stand to put them on, but nothing planted in them. and the stand is empty. it’s a beautiful setting but just doesn’t seem right because something is missing. just like my sentences are not right because there are no capital letters.

God knew us before we were born and knows every hair on our head. He knows how each day will unfold and knows the best plan for our lives. So wouldn’t our best plan be to ask our Creator and the One who loves us more than we can even imagine what we should do with our lives? Blessings to all…

God is our Rock

“My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no one can reach me. Oh my people, trust in Him at all times.” Ps. 62:6,7

God is the only one that we can fully trust. God is the only one who we can lean against that isn’t going to fall over. He is a rock that isn’t going to break or move. He is the shelter that isn’t going to leak or fail. He will bring us victory over all our battles against people, illness, and demons.

We have all had friends, or family members even, that have hurt us or betrayed us. I can think of one time I have done it, not even intentionally. I told a friend of a friend something that I had no right to tell. But was unaware she did not know about it until afterward. So I was puzzled when the second friend was not talking to me. I was in the process of moving and didn’t have time to talk to her about it. A few years later, the Lord reminded me of the situation and I realized what had happened. I tried to contact the friend but had lost her information. I asked God for forgiveness and of course, He granted it. But once in awhile I still think of the friend and regret what happened. I still hate what happened and God has to remind me that I am forgiven. But we are human and we do things that we regret and hopefully we learn from them.

No matter what we say or do to God, He won’t abandon us. There are times in our lives when He feels far away, like He’s not answering ours prayers or our words are hitting a glass ceiling. But His answer may be “not now” or “I have something else in mind.” But that’s not what we want to hear so we ignore it and keep praying the same thing. Sometimes the best way to get your answer to prayer is sit still and be quiet and praise God for what He is going to do and has done for you in the past. And be quiet for awhile. Just picture Him on His throne or on a cloud or however you see Him at rest. Then wait. I’ve heard Him with an audible voice and I’ve heard a whisper in my heart. Or I’ve heard nothing and He’s said something through a friend or pastor. But trust in Him and He will give you all you need. God bless you friends.

After surgery

Here it is 12 hours after my surgery and my eyesight with one “fixed” eye is better than both eyes with corrective lenses that were becoming ineffective. Praise God for modern medicine!

As I said I need my previous posts I was anxious before the surgery but they did give me an anti-anxiety drug which helped tremendously. Then I could concentrate on what the dr was asking me to do and not on pain or my surroundings. That’s how God’s Word helps us sometimes isn’t it? Don’t get me wrong, but I’m not comparing God’s Word to drugs… But in order for me to be comfortable on that hospital bed and allow the dr to take a knife to my eye without me kicking and screaming, I needed something to keep me calm. The Bible can give us those words of love, and comfort, and Words straight from God’s own heart to ours to give us peace and love. I hope you will continue to seek God and His Word each day for those things whatever the situation in your life.
